This year Futuraskolan International’s Global Citizen Project (GCP) traveled to Greece participating in the Erasmus EU program in collaboration with the Themistocles School in Athens, Greece.
At the same time, Futuraskolan students volunteered for two Greek NGO’s @elix.greece and @hamogelo.
We would like to thank our parent community for their generous donations for the two NGO’s and our amazing students for volunteering 🇬🇷 It was an incredible experience and one our learners (and staff) won’t forget.

The Global Citizenship Program is in Athens, Greece!
A project in the works for some time: 24 of our amazing Grade 9 Learners and 10 accompanying staff got the chance to explore the beauty and history on Sunday. An amazing cultural opportunity made possible by the European Unions Erasmus+ Program!Global Citizenship Program Greece 2024 has landed in Athens! #globalcitizenship
Day 1: Travel Day to Athens, Greece!
Day 2: Collaboration between Themistoklis and Futuraskolan students in Athens, Greece
In the morning, we met with our partner school for this project – @themistoklis_school – where the Learners made some amazing connections, as well as learning about the school’s work with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, and about the European Parliament. In the afternoon, we visited @elix.greece – an aid organisation that works with the education of refugee children. The donations collected by our GCP Learners will go a long way to helping out those in need.
Day 3: What an experience!
Futuraskolan continued its partnership-building with @themistoklis_school. Our Learners and Staff were blown away by all the sustainability goals -focused Erasmus projects they have had – we are all very inspired for the future. We ended our time with a huge game of volleyball in the courtyard.
The afternoon was spent with @elix.greece. Futuraskolan Learners had the opportunity to directly interact and assist in lessons for the refugee children – ages ranging from 6 to 17. Staff had the opportunity to meet with Elix’s central Coordinator and hear about the challenges experienced in the refugee camps
Day 4: We were so busy we forgot to post! No news is good news, right?
Day 5: What a day!
We have spent the morning visiting Elliniko-Argyroupoli Fire Lookout Station. We worked with ELIX and the fire station volunteers to walk the hill and collect plastic. It was valuable work for us to contribute to this project creating the first plastic free mountain in Greece. #futuraskolanvolunteering #day5
Day 6 of our Global Citizens in Greece!
Today we visited @hamogelo (Smile of a Child) – an organisation that works with refugee, displaced, and unhomed children from the ages of 4-17. Our Learners helped with some facilities maintenance to assist in keeping a stress-free environment for the children and staff. We also brought some clothing and toy donations that had been collected over the previous weeks.
In the afternoon, we had some downtime for a quick spot of shopping and later, team games back at the hotel.

Friendships made, partnerships established, adventures and experiences had – what an amazing week!
There’s something beautiful having the opportunity to witness our Learners experience a different world view and grow from this encounter. Each of our Learners rose to the occasion presented in this trip and listening to their reflections has been heart-warming. A sincere thank you to all 24 of our amazing Futuraskolan GCP Learners ❤️
