Futuraskolan and Hands2Ocean Join Forces Cleaning the Waters of Gåshaga, Lidingö

On May 26th,  Futuraskolan International, in partnership with Hands2Ocean, hosted a one-day event focused on environmental education and action at Gåshaga Marina. Students from Gåshaga School, Stockholm (Bilingual), and Kottla participated in various activities designed to enhance their learning within the “Climate Control” IPC unit, following the LGr22 criteria.

The itinerary included a shared lunch, an introduction by Hands2Ocean, with various activities at Gåshaga Båtklubb/Marina, and a debriefing session. This event not only fostered collaboration between schools but also deepened students’ understanding of environmental issues and sustainable practices.

Hands 2 Ocean (H2O) is a non-profit organization started by Fredrik Johansson and the community support group Främja. H2O’s mission is to remove toxins and rubbish from Lake Mälaren/the Baltic Sea and raise awareness so that people stop throwing garbage into our beautiful and fragile aquatic environment. Today, the organization consists of over 300 volunteers, both below and above the water’s surface, who regularly participate. Hands2Ocean, previously Rena Mälaren (Clean Mälaren), conducts at least one clean-up per week, often more.

On this day, Futuraskolan and H2O joined forces to make a difference in our local waters at Gåshaga Brygga near Futuraskolan’s Gåshaga school and Preschool. The event saw our Grade 6 and 8 students engaging in hands-on activities such as rope pulling, magnet fishing, and sorting the trash found in the Gåshaga waters. Kottla’s Grade 8 students worked on a multimedia project to create a video documenting the day’s events. Preschool learners from Gåshaga Preschool were on the sidelines supporting our students in our big clean-up adventure.

Big thanks to Hands2Ocean for everything you do and for guiding us on this fun and inspiring day!

This partnership highlights Futuraskolan’s commitment to providing students with real-world learning experiences and fostering environmental stewardship.
