Futuraskolan’s Grade 9 GCP Trip to Greece!

Futuraskolan Grade 9’s had a fantastic trip to Greece this October. Through the Erasmus+ programme some of our grade 9’s were able to go to Greece with our Global Citizenship Program (Futuraskolan GCP).

This was Futuraskolan’s first of 4 Global Citizenship Program trip to Greece for our Grade 9’s for this academic year 20204/25. What an adventure it was! Such an incredible group of future world citizens! We would like to thank @themistoklis_school MIO, Restion Elderly Home, SPAY, and @elix.greece for their hard work and commitment to helping us deliver such an enriching experience for the #globalgoals2030
Thank you all! 🫶

Have a look at our Grade 9’s days in Greece below!

Day 2

As part of our partnership with the Greek learners from @themistoklis_school, Futuraskolan students participated in a beach clean-up run by the Mediterranean Information Office for Environment, Culture and Sustainable Development.

Over the course of the hour our learners managed to pick up a considerable amount of trash from the beach. The most common being plastic bottle lids, plastic waste associated with candy, plastic straws, and cigarette butts.

Even though the EU has implemented a number of laws regulating this trash in recent years, it is important to understand that we have decades of this plastic trash in the environment; that it takes between 20 and 500 years for these specific plastics to decompose, and that this is a HUGE problem in a large majority of the world. Every year – current estimates indicate – that we ingest approximately one bank card worth of micro-plastics!

Partnering with @themistoklis_school our learners also collaborated in small groups on “BAM: Bullying A Matter of self esteem”. They presented their views on the possible impacts of bullying on youth and proceeded to explore ways in which someone experiencing such social challenges can get help or be helped.

Day 3

our partnership with @themistoklis_school continued with “giving life” to the learners collaborative creations of individuals suffering from bullying and following with reflective discussion on how to help in such situations.

From there, we took a brief dive into the data of plastic waste and our oceans with MIO. We then followed with a ” tinkering” exercise themed on upcycling. Our creative learners made fashion accessories and posters from plastic trash.

An incredibly busy day with plenty of fun and individual growth.

Day 4

We spent half day participating in a reforestation project of Hymettos Mountain with @elix.greece and our other partner organisation SPAY with our friends and partner @themistoklis_school. In the afternoon, our learners got some much-deserved downtime for shopping and exploring the Plaka region of Athens before touring the Acropolis! It was an amazing experience for our learners.

Day 5

Today, we had a rewarding day with our 9th graders in Athens.

We started by visiting a local nursing home where the students spent time with the residents and participated in a few activities. It was a meaningful experience for everyone involved. (Global Goal 3: Good Health & Wellbeing and Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities)

Afterward, we headed into the city for some sightseeing and lunch.

We wrapped up the day with a visit to the famous Temple of Poseidon on the outskirts of Athens, enjoying the sunny weather and a bit of cultural history. (Global Goal 4: Quality Education & Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities)

Day 6

Our final day in Greece. 😍 We did a Nafplio City historical treasure hunt with some of the learners from our partner @themistoklis_school ❤️ Nafplio is incredibly beautiful and interesting – we had such a wonderful day.
This has been such an incredible journey with our learners. They have done, grown, and achieved so much. We – the chaperones – are immensely proud of our learners and grateful for such a wonderful group to have followed on the first GCP Grade 9 trip of the year.
BRAVO!
